BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — A Brooklyn charter school student took a bullet to the abdomen Wednesday in a daylight shooting in a downtown park, according to police.

The 15-year-old was attacked by two other young people in McLaughlin Park, on Tillary Street and Flatbush Avenue, about 1:45 p.m., Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a press conference.

"It's always a concern to return to school," Essig said. "We see the shooting victims, the shooting perpetrators, younger and younger."

The teen left Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School on Jay and Sands streets about 1:30 p.m. then made his way to a park bench where he sat with two girls, according to the NYPD.

Two "school-aged" young men approached and a fist fight broke out, said Essig.

One of the pair, dressed all in black and ski masks, shot the teen and ran away, according to the NYPD chief.

Medics took the teen to Methodist Hospital in critical condition, according to the NYPD.

The two girls were taken to the 84th Precinct to share their stories, police said.

Police will investigate whether or not the fight was linked to the charter school, Essig said.
