Brooklyn Student Brings Loaded Gun to First Day of School, Cops Say

A 15-year-old at Brooklyn School for Career Development was arrested after trying to bring the handgun into school Thursday.

FORT GREENE, NY — One Brooklyn student was arrested before getting into class on the first day of school.

According to the NYPD, a 15-year-old student at Brooklyn School for Career Development was arrested Thursday morning when trying to enter the school with a loaded handgun in his backpack. The gun triggered a metal detector at the school's entrance, and the child was taken into custody without incident, police said. Charges are still pending.

The school, located at 510 Clermont Ave., serves grades 9 through 12 and has an enrollment of 246 students.

There were no arrests or summonses at Brooklyn School for Career Development in the first quarter of 2016. However, the nearby Prospect Heights Educational Complex, which holds four schools, recorded a city-high 17 incidents of arrests, summonses or juvenile reports.
