Judge Claimed To Live In Clinton Hill Rental To Keep Job: Report

Brooklyn Judge ShawnDya Simpson has used rental apartments in Clinton Hill to claim residency, the New York Post reported.

FORT GREENE, NY — A Brooklyn Supreme Court judge used rental apartments in Clinton Hill and Downtown Brooklyn to claim residency in the state to keep her job, despite living in New Jersey, the New York Post reported.

Judge ShawnDya Simpson listed her home on official forms as rentals at 230 Jay S. and 275 Park Ave. since 2003, even though she actually lived in the South Orange, N.J., house she bought in 1998, the Post found.

Despite giving up the Park Avenue apartment in March 2017 and a new person renting it out in September, Simpson used the address to file an absentee ballot on Nov. 6, 2017, according to the Post.

She then switched her address to an apartment at 200 Schermerhorn St. in Downtown Brooklyn that her daughter shares with two roommates, the Post reported. The management company of that building told the Post that the judge doesn't live there.

State law requires judges and elected officials to be a resident of New York, but Simpson has been using second addresses to meet the requirement for years, according to the Post.
