Elderly Woman's Subway Attacker Charged With Hate Crime: BK DA

Lamont Dinkins allegedly demanded the 72-year-old stop speaking Spanish then punched her in the face, prosecutors said.

BROOKLYN, NY — A man accused of hurling slurs and throwing punches at an elderly woman in a Brooklyn subway station now faces hate crime charges, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Lamont Dinkins, 43, was also charged with assault for his encounter with a 72-year-old woman at the Jay Street-Metro Tech station on Jan. 18, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office announced.

"Stop speaking in Spanish, you Spanish b---h," Dinkins allegedly told the woman, who was having a conversation on her cellphone.

Dinkins, of The Bronx, then punched the senior multiple times in the face and head in an unprompted attack, the DA said.

"Bias-motivated attacks will not be tolerated in Brooklyn, which prides itself on its diversity and inclusion," said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.

"[It's] particularly egregious because of the victim’s vulnerability and the defendant’s hateful language."

Dinkins, who was arrested at the Barclays Center station shortly after the attack, is being held on $50,000 bail and was ordered to return to court on April 1, prosecutors said.
