Navy Yard Helps Celebrate Fleet Week

Annual shore leave has deep roots in Brooklyn.

There was a time in Brooklyn's history where every day was Fleet Week. During its active military service from 1801 to 1966, the Brooklyn Navy Yard hosted thousands of sailors—on leave, on duty and somewhere in between—both at the Yard itself or in immediate vicinity.

So it makes sense that one of New York's oldest military installations will be front and center in welcoming men and women in uniform—albeit, for some wholesome, "family" entertainment.

This Saturday, the Navy Yard will host a Family Fun Day celebrating Fleet Week with hands-on demos by Construction Kids, tours of the Yard, a blacksmithing demonstration, bluegrass music, food vendors and more.

The fun starts with the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner by students of on Sat., May 26 at noon at BLDG 92, located at 63 Flushing Ave. at Carlton Avenue.
