NYC's Most Dangerous Area for Cyclists Is Fort Greene-Clinton Hill

And the most dangerous for pedestrians is Borough Park-Kensington-Mapleton.

The Auto Insurance Center released some super neat graphics filled with some super scary data on New York City traffic collisions this week.

The center used the city’s new OpenData portal to sort through more than 200,000 collisions across NYC’s five boroughs between March 2014 and April 2015 in order to ”reveal where crashes happen, who they involve [and] what are their causes.”

The findings in general are fascinating; we recommend a long, slow scroll through the lot of them.

But there’s one standout figure that confirms what many residents of the Fort Greene-Clinton Hill area have suspected all along: The 88th precinct has a higher cyclist injury rate, per total number of crashes, than any other precinct in the city.

For every 100 collisions in the area, about eight cyclists are injured, the report says — ”four times higher than the NYC precinct average.”

According to the Auto Insurance Center:

In March 2015, the NYPD wrote 14 cycling summons in the 88th Precinct, compared to just two in the same period the year before. The precinct’s commanding officer said that many of accidents involving cyclists were due to them running red lights.

Brooklyn’s 66th precinct a few miles south — encompassing the Borough Park, Kensington and Mapleton neighborhoods — came in second, with about five cyclist injuries per 100 collisions.

The 66th precinct also ranked as NYC‘s most dangerous zone for pedestrians: Roughly 10 percent of its crashes in the test period resulted in a pedestrian injury.
