Stop & Shop Continues to Invest in NYC
Barclays Center Location Marks Supermarket's Second Brooklyn Remodel and Seventh in NYC as part of Stop & Shop's $140 Million NYC Investment
Stop & Shop today cut the ribbon at its newly remodeled Atlantic Terminal store located at 625 Atlantic Ave. The ceremony was attended by Stop & Shop President, Gordon Reid and representatives from Food Bank For New York City. This marked the seventh Stop & Shop across New York City and the second Stop & Shop in Brooklyn to be upgraded as part of the supermarket chain’s $140 million capital investment across its New York City fleet.
Stop & Shop’s commitment to New York City contrasts with an alarming trend across the NYC retail landscape. According to a report issued by the Center for an Urban Future, five of the top 25 chains in the city shuttered 78 stores across NYC in 2022. When compared to pre-pandemic levels, there are 781, or 9.8%, fewer chain stores in the city in 2022 than in 2019.
“The grand reopening of this store underscores Stop & Shop’s commitment to our Brooklyn customers and our belief that pandemic-related issues impacting the New York City economy will be overcome,” said Gordon Reid, Stop & Shop President. “In addition to a $140 million capital investment in our stores, we’re deeply committed to the local community through our continued support of hunger-relief efforts across the city and strong partnership with the food bank.”

The Atlantic Terminal store joins the Sheepshead Bay location in offering Brooklyn customers a refreshed look, upgraded format and new amenities that seek to enhance the customer shopping experience and better meet the needs of the diverse neighbors its serves. To commemorate the remodel, Stop & Shop donated $40,000 to Food Bank For New York City – a nod to the hunger relief organization’s 40th anniversary which will be celebrated this year.
At the heart of Stop & Shop’s enhancements to its NYC stores is an expanded product assortment that caters to the diverse neighborhood each store serves. Aisles 5 and 6 are now a ‘Global Market’ – a multicultural destination boasting a largely expanded assortment of Asian, West Indian, West African, and Eastern European products. The store has also expanded its produce offerings to include more tropical fruits and vegetables, along with expanded Halal dairy and meat, both fresh and frozen. In total, customers can now find nearly 1,500 new multicultural products across the store.

To commemorate the Atlantic Terminal remodel and help celebrate Food Bank For New York City’s 40th anniversary this year, Stop & Shop donated $40,000 to help in the fight against hunger across New York City. Stop & Shop is a decade’s long partner to Food Bank, supporting the organization and its various programs.
“Food Bank For New York City celebrates and praises the commitment and investment Stop & Shop is making as part of their chain’s $140 million capital investment efforts across the city,” said Janis Robinson, Food Bank For New York City’s Vice President of Institutions and Partnerships. “Stop & Shop’s generous donation in recognition of Food Bank’s milestone anniversary will help us reach more members of our community—especially those in Brooklyn, as nearly 16% of its residents experience food insecurity.”
Stop & Shop began operating in New York City more than two decades ago and currently operates 25 stores in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island – and home delivery in all five boroughs. Stop & Shop currently operates three stores in Brooklyn.
