2 Fled On Foot After Car Crash: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Dec. 14.
Dec. 8
- Officers responded to Franklin Avenue where a vehicle struck and damaged a railroad gate stanchion. It was determined the male driver and female passenger fled the scene on foot. Officers located the two on Hilton Avenue and arrested the driver for leaving the scene of an accident and unlicensed operation. The woman was transported to a local hospital for a chest injury.
- A driver on Merillon Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended registration and passing a Stop sign.
- A truck driver on Franklin Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and revoked highway tax permit.

- Officers investigated a two-vehicle crash on Stewart Avenue where one of the vehicles left the scene and the driver of the vehicle remaining at the scene suffered a leg injury. The fleeing driver was apprehended in Parking Field 7N and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury.
- Two packages were reported stolen from a Willow Street front stoop.
- A resident received a scam phone call from someone who said her grandson was arrested and needed $7,000 for bail. The resident immediately hung up and called her grandson to verify he was okay and not arrested.
Dec. 10
- Officers assisted firefighters who extinguished a small fire inside a garbage receptacle on the St. Paul’s grounds.
- Officers investigated two separate incidents on Cherry Valley Avenue where a truck struck the train trestle. Both drivers were charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
- A motorist on Mulberry Street at Wetherill Road was charged with unlicensed operation and passing a stop sign.
- Officers responded to Chestnut Street where a vehicle struck the train trestle. The driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.

- Cash and credit cards were reported stolen from a vehicle parked in a Kildare Road driveway.
- Officers responded to Meadow Street for a report of gun shots. Upon investigation, it was determined the incident occurred nearby in Hempstead.
- Officers assisted firefighters who responded to Rockaway Avenue for a transformer fire, which ignited a nearby fence and caused power outages and electrical issues in area homes. All fires were extinguished. No injuries were reported.
- A driver on Stewart Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and a defective windshield.
- A man entered Kings Supermarket and selected $900 in assorted food products before leaving the store without paying for them.
Dec. 12
- Officers responded to Hamilton Place, where a driver struck a parked unoccupied vehicle. Upon investigation, the driver, a 72-year-old man, was arrested for DWI. He was charged with a felony due to a prior DWI offense.
- A vehicle left the scene after striking and damaging a walk signal post and a street sign on Nassau Boulevard.
Dec. 13
- Officers responded to a Wellington Road residence for an alarm activation and discovered a rear window screen removed and the window open. A man had entered the residence through the window, set off an interior alarm and left the home through the front door after taking some jewelry. Video surveillance showed the man entering a getaway vehicle with an unknown operator. The investigation is ongoing.
- Officers assisted firefighters, who responded to St. Paul’s Field and extinguished a garbage can fire.
- A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended license and operating a cell phone while driving.
Dec. 14
- A check placed in the mail was reportedly intercepted, altered and cashed by someone.
- A driver on County Seat Drive was charged with driving with a suspended license and a suspended registration.
- Officers assisted firefighters, who extinguished a small fire in a catch basin on Mulberry Avenue.
- Police and firefighters responded to a residence for a burning smell and determined the source to be a dryer that was safeguarded and disconnected.
