Bomb Scare At Garden City Middle School Was Hoax: Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Jan. 31.

Jan. 25
• Subjects were seen on surveillance cameras checking car door handles in a Franklin Court driveway.
• A driver on Edgemere Road was charged with driving with a suspended license and passing a stop sign.
• Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a gas odor. Firefighters determined the cause to be a defective boiler and rendered the area safe.
• A truck struck the Cherry Valley overpass. The operator was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
• A driver on Stewart Avenue and Edgemere Road was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.

Jan. 26
• A truck driver on Stewart Avenue was charged with driving with fraudulent license plates and no highway tax use permit.
• Officers responded to a traffic light malfunction on Clinton Road at Old Country Road.
• Firefighters and police responded to Adelphi University for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be burnt food.
• A driver on Stewart Avenue was charged with driving with switched license plates, unregistered vehicle and no insurance.

Jan. 27
• Officers responded to a Franklin Avenue bank for an alarm activation. Upon investigation, Officers arrested a woman for attempting to withdraw money from a victim’s account by presenting forged identification documents. The woman was charged with identity theft, two counts of possession of a forged instrument and attempted grand larceny.
• A victim said the password to her cash app was changed, resulting in unauthorized withdrawals against her bank account.
• A vehicle was observed by witnesses leaving the scene after backing into and damaging another vehicle in Parking Field 8.
• A driver involved in a crash on Herricks Road was charged with unlicensed operation.

Jan. 28
• Officers investigated a report of youths throwing rocks at vehicles in the vicinity of Hilton Avenue and Barnes Lane. One driver stated her vehicle sustained a broken rear window. The youths fled southbound. Officers apprehended one of the youths. He was cited for the incident and released to his parents.
• Firefighters and police responded to Adelphi University for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be cooking smoke.
• Officers responded to Franklin Avenue and 14th Street for a traffic light malfunction.
• A driver on Franklin Avenue and 7th Street was charged with driving with a suspended license and a suspended registration.

Jan. 29
• Officers responded to a Barnes Lane residence to investigate a report of the garage door opening for unknown reasons. A resident said she observed a vehicle in the area at the time of occurrence. The premise was checked, and all appeared to be in order.
• A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
• Officers were assigned to traffic and safety details for a vigil and rally on Old Country Road. No incidents were reported.
• Officers investigated a report of a victim’s identity being stolen to open an unauthorized insurance account.
• A resident reports the theft of jewelry from her bedroom. The victim states she has had workers inside her home recently.

Jan. 30
• Officers responded to the Garden City Middle School where staff received a phone call stating there were multiple bombs placed inside the building. Officers and school staff safely evacuated the students. Garden City Officers conducted a search of the building and surrounding area with assistance from school staff, a Garden City Fire Department Chief and Nassau County police officers. Upon completion, the incident was deemed unfounded. Officers and school staff safely escorted the students back to the school. The investigation regarding the origin of the call is ongoing.
• A victim reported he sold an item to another person for cash and when he attempted to deposit the cash in a bank it was determined that most of the money was counterfeit.
• Officers investigated a report of criminal mischief at the Bird Sanctuary where multiple items were found damaged.
• A victim reported her vehicle was damaged by unknown means while parked on the Adelphi University campus.
• Officers investigated a report of a suspicious bag left in the vicinity of the Post Office and determined it to be rubbish.
• A driver on Washington Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and using a cell phone while driving.

Jan. 31
• A company’s email was hacked and used to make multiple unauthorized financial transactions resulting in a monetary loss.
• Officers investigated reports of vehicle entries on Rockaway Avenue and Somerset Avenue. There has been no loss reported.
• Police received a report of unauthorized dumping of refuse onto a Monroe Street property.
• A window to a vehicle parked on Commercial Avenue was found damaged by unknown means.
• Firefighters and police responded to two locations for fire alarms where the cause in both cases was overcooked food.
