Mineola

  • A barricaded man had a four-hour standoff with Nassau County police in Mineola July 4 before being apprehended. Police identified Roger Camp, who was reportedly emotionally disturbed and held up in the home of his ex-girlfriend on Latham Road near Wilson Boulevard. Additional police were called to the scene at about 1 p.m., including several SWAT team vehicles and personnel sporting assault weapons and body armor as well as at least three Nassau County Police ambulances. Police had cordoned off an area of several blocks, not allowing residents in or out of their homes. A White Road resident who was standing at the intersection of Florence Road since police would not let him back in his home, stated that Camp reportedly threatened to shoot the woman and the couple's children in the house before she fled earlier in the day and reported him to police. It is unknown the number of guns – if any – Camp had in the home. Residents were told by police to stay in their homes and basements. Camp was apprehended at about 4:30 p.m. after he voluntarily exited the house. Police then took the man to a nearby hospital for evaluation. He was charged with aggravated harassment, a misdemeanor.

West Hempstead

  • Nassau County Police arrested a man for allegedly setting fire to four separate dumpsters in West Hempstead on the Fourth of July. Four Precinct officers said they responded to the fires on July 4 at the following time and locations: 525 Hempstead Turnpike at 5 a.m., 346 Hempstead Turnpike at 5:15 a.m., 543A Hempstead Turnpike at 5:30 a.m. and 621 Hempstead Turnpike at 5:50 a.m. After an investigation it was discovered that the defendant, Emmanuel Borg, 24, of Queens, had set fire to the above listed dumpsters, police said. At the final location of 621 Hempstead Turnpike, Borg allegedly took a bundle of newspapers in front of CVS and set fire to the dumpster belonging to the store. Borg then resisted arrest by kicking his legs, feet and refusing to be handcuffed, police said. Officers were able to gain control of the defendant and place him under arrest. Borg was charged with fourth degree arson, three counts of fifth degree arson, petty larceny and resisting arrest.
  • A man was injured after his motorcycle collided with an SUV on Hempstead Avenue in West Hempstead July 5 around 11:15 a.m. The man was trapped underneath his motorcycle for a short time until firefighters were able to remove him to a nearby ambulance. Traffic in the area was backed up into Malverne Village for a short time as northbound cars were diverted onto the parkway.
