District Thanks Board of Education For Time, Hard Work

Garden City Public Schools expresses its appreciation to the members of the Board of Education who serve the school district and community without pay in order to maintain the high quality of education for which Garden City is known.

Serving as a board member requires hours of work each week. In fact, the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) estimates that serving as a new board member requires 6.25 hours per week and takes 2.88 years to become fully acclimated to the position.

What level of education do board members possess? NYSSBA’s survey found that board members typically are well-educated with 75 percent possessing at least a Bachelor’s degree (29.5 percent is the national average) and 36.6 percent possessing advanced degrees. Nearly 73 percent work full-time at their careers. The same survey indicated that among the “most urgent issues” faced by school districts include the budget and funding (90 percent) and improving student learning (79.1 percent).

The school district extends its thanks and gratitude to Garden City’s school board members: Trustees Tom Pinou and Robert Martin, President Barbara Trapasso, Trustee Laura Hastings and Vice President Angela Heineman.
