Drunken Driver Fell Asleep, Crashed Into Tree: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Jan. 24.

Jan. 18

• A driver on South Avenue at Brompton Road was charged with aggressive driving (unsafe speed and passing a stop sign).

Jan. 19

• Police are investigating an occupied burglary on Meadow Street, where a man entered the residence and removed various items from the first floor. Entry was made through an unlocked door. Officers also investigated three attempted burglaries (two on Pine Street and one on Garden Street) where window screens and doors were damaged. There were no apparent entries into these homes. The incidents occurred during the overnight hours. No injuries were reported. The investigations are ongoing.
• Officers investigated an attempted scam where a victim received a call from a person claiming to be her grandson, stating he was arrested for an accident and needed bail. The victim then spoke with a woman claiming to be her grandson’s attorney, who instructed the victim to retrieve cash to bail out the victim. The victim called her grandson and determined he was not arrested.
• Firefighters and officers responded to a residence for a report of a fire and determined the water heater had malfunctioned.
• Firefighters and officers responded to a residence for a fire alarm and determined it was activated by burnt food.

Jan. 20

• A 42-year-old man was arrested after trespassing inside a Franklin Avenue office building after closing hours.
• A person reported someone stole her identity and opened an unauthorized bank account in her name.
• A driver on Washington Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.
• A person's identity was used to open an unauthorized credit card account which was later used to make purchases.
• An employee received an email from what appeared a supervisor instructing her to make a monetary bank transfer. It was determined to be a scam when the company’s bank notified the employer and determined the email was not sent by him.
• Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a fire alarm and determined the cause was a faulty alarm.

Jan. 21

• Police are investigating a suspicious incident on Kingsbury Road where a cardboard box with suspicious wording on it was left in front of a residence.
• A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended license and an uninspected vehicle.
• A driver on Franklin Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.
• A driver on Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and excessive speed.
• A victim determined his identity was stolen after he responded to his bank to complete a transaction and was advised his account was compromised and switched to an out-of-state address.

Jan. 22

• Officers responded to Chestnut Street for a report of a vehicle striking a tree. The vehicle was in drive and running, and the driver was sleeping. The officers were able to safely place the vehicle in park and remove the driver. The 22-year-old driver was arrested and charged with DWI.
• Officers investigated a domestic incident on Whitehall Boulevard.
• Firefighters and police responded to Adelphi University for a carbon monoxide alarm and determined the detector had expired.
• Firefighters and police responded to a business for a fire alarm and determined it was activated by the cleaning steam.
• Police received a report of a NICE bus displaying “Emergency, call 911” on Franklin Avenue. Officers stopped the bus on Old Country Road and, upon investigation, determined the bus’s emergency display system was malfunctioning.
• A motorist on Hilton Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and passing a stop sign at 4th Street.

Jan. 23

• Officers investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene after colliding with another vehicle on Stewart Avenue.
• Officers safeguarded Golf Club Lane for a fallen tree limb blocking traffic. The limb was removed by the Parks Department.
• Firefighters and officers responded to a restaurant for a fire alarm and determined it was activated by burnt food.
• An Old Country Road business reported the theft of an iPad from their company office.

Jan. 24

• A Garden City business reported a check placed in the mail at the Garden City Post Office was intercepted, altered and cashed.
• Officers and Water Department personnel responded to a residence for a water line break. The water supply to the residence was turned off until the arrival of a plumbing repair service.
• A driver on South Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation, excessive speed and passing a stop sign.
• A driver on Garden Street and Clinton Road was charged with driving with a suspended license and not wearing a seatbelt.
• A driver on Clinch Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and passing a stop sign.
• A driver on Rockaway Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.
