Returning FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School) students to Stewart School have been undergoing a multi-week review of the vocabulary and expressions they learned in second, third and fourth grades.
Second graders are being introduced to the sounds of Spanish through an introduction to the various greetings for the times of the day, as well as introducing themselves and asking others’ their names.
Mid-September began a month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage month. Second, third and fourth grade students have been focusing on the names, location and flags of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries in the world, while the fifth graders are discovering the cultural traditions, sports and festivals of Spain.
By mid-fall, second graders will be learning to express how they are feeling, and counting from 0 to 31 in Spanish. Third grade students will be learning the parts of the face and body, and playing “Simon Says” in their second language.
Fourth graders will be beginning a unit on houses which includes the vocabulary for the rooms and furnishings, and writing an essay about their homes. Fifth graders will start a unit on shopping, focusing on stores found both here and abroad.
