Five Ways to Give Back in Garden City

Donate food, become a hotline volunteer and more.

Here are five different ways to help a neighbor in Garden City and give back to your community:

Petra's Promise: Friends of Petra Dehler, a Garden City mother of two who suffered a severe stroke in April, have teamed up to create a fundraising effort named in her honor - Petra’s Promise. Petra's Promise was founded to raise funds to help defray the cost of Petra’s long-term medical care and rehabilitation. If interested in donating contact either Katie Colavito at kcolavito@yahoo.com or Grace Trimmer at tgtrim@optonline.net. Monetary donations are also being accepted. Checks should be made out to Petra’s Promise and forwarded to: Petra’s Promise, P.O. Box 33, Garden City, NY  11530.

Food Drive: The Garden City Public Library, in cooperation with Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank, is sponsoring a summer food drive Aug. 2-29. A collection box will be located in the lobby entrance. Non-perishable items are needed. Canned goods, dry goods, snack foods, personal care items are among the most needed items.

Fall Benefit Yard Sale: The Garden City Bird Sanctuary/Tanners Pond Environmental Center will hold its Fall Benefit Yard Sale Saturday, Sept. 7, at the sanctuary. (Rain date is Saturday, Sept. 14.) Profits from the rental spaces at the sale will benefit the sanctuary and will be used for ongoing environmental educational programs and improvements at the site.

"The Keith" Caddie Tournament: The fifth annual Keith R. Cerrato golf tournament will take place Monday, Aug. 5 sat Cherry Valley Club in memory of the Garden City resident who passed away in a tragic accident nearly seven years ago. All net proceeds benefit the Keith Cerrato Charitable Fund Inc., which distributes the proceeds to two scholarship funds for students in need at Hofstra University and Chaminade High School.

Adelphi Breast Cancer Support Program: The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking volunteers to help with fundraising, community outreach, publicity and office work, as well as answering hotline calls. The next five-session training cycle starts Thursday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Call JoMarie Cook at 877-4329 for more information about the training and to schedule an appointment for an interview.
