Garden City Crime Blotter: Mail Carrier Comes to Elderly Resident's Aid

Post Office employee notices something awry at a St. Paul's Crescent home, discovers woman is trapped in her bathroom and calls police.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

July 25: Lawn furniture was stolen from the property of a Roxbury Rd. residence. Some of the furniture was later located by an officer on the property of the Garden City Country Club.

July 25: Officer Wehr observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Rockaway Ave. pass a Stop sign at Merillon Avenue. The vehicle was then stopped where it was determined that the driver, a male 28-year-old from Hempstead, had eight open driver's license suspensions including a suspension for DWI. He was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation and for passing a Stop sign.

July 26: The police department collected 174 used cell phones from residents and forwarded them to the Cell Phones for Soldiers Program so that service men and woman oversees will receive phone access availability to contact their family and friends back home. The program also assists returning veterans with communication needs as well as physical, emotional and assimilation hardships.

July 26: Packages left by a delivery service were removed from a porch of a Nassau Blvd. residence. Total loss: $475.

July 26: A resident’s credit card was reported stolen and subsequently there were numerous attempts to use the card in a nearby jurisdiction.

July 27: While on patrol, Officer Russell stopped a vehicle on Franklin Ave. for a cracked windshield. He then determined that the registration was suspended as well as the operator’s license. The operator was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, suspended registration, equipment violation (cracked windshield) and uninsured operation.

July 28: Officer Milito arrested a male 28-year-old from Mineola for the theft of several men’s clothing items from Sears valued at $178. Officer Milito also arrested a male 29-year-old from Mineola for the theft of several men’s clothing items valued at $168. The two subjects are brothers.

July 29: Officer Oswald observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on Meadow St. in the westbound lane. The vehicle was traveling towards the officer who was in the westbound lane. The vehicle then passed a Stop sign at Magnolia Ave. where he made a right turn without stopping or signaling. In addition, the operator turned off his headlights while driving on Magnolia St. The officer then stopped the operator, a male 24-year-old from Garden City, who was subsequently arrested for DWI (.10 percent blood alcohol content), possession of marijuana, driving on the wrong side of the road, passing a Stop sign, driving without headlights on and turning without signaling.

July 29: Officer Marceda stopped a vehicle for defective brake lights on Old Country Rd. It was then determined that the operator, a male 21-year-old from Uniondale, had eight open license suspensions. He was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, suspended registration and uninsured operation.

July 29: Officer Dallolio arrested a male 19-year-old from West Hempstead for marijuana possession after observing the subject walking on Cambridge Ave. while carrying a glass water pipe containing marijuana.

July 30: Officer Marceda stopped a vehicle on Stewart Ave. for an unsafe lane change without signaling. Upon his investigation, the driver, a female 33-year-old from Hempstead, was arrested for aggravated unlicensed operation, second degree, for a prior DWI, aggravated unlicensed, third degree, for three active license suspensions, unsafe lane change and uninsured operation.

July 30: Officer Byrd arrested a male 24-year-old from Coram for the theft of a dress valued at $128 from Sears. The subject had fled the scene in a vehicle after the theft but was stopped by officers on Stewart Ave.

July 30: A resident’s credit card was used to make a purchase of $293 that was sent to an out-of-state address.

July 30: At approximately 3 p.m. a mail carrier was delivering mail to an elderly St. Paul’s Crescent resident. The carrier frequently checks on the resident knowing she is elderly and living alone. As he approached the residence he observed steam coming out the bathroom window and heard water running. He knocked on the door and yelled her name. The resident yelled back that she fell and needed help. The mail carrier then notified police to respond. Police officers responded to the residence and requested the fire department to also respond. A firefighter made entry through the open bathroom window and discovered the 87-year-old female lying on the bathroom floor, wedged between the toilet and the tub. The shower was running. The resident apparently attempted to enter the shower on Saturday but fell causing her to be wedged. The officers and fireman turned off the water and the toilet was carefully cut away freeing the resident. One of the bolts anchoring the toilet to the floor was cut in order to pivot the toilet to free the victim. Two Nassau County police ambulances and two of their medics were also on scene. The resident apparently suffered a hip injury and was transported to Winthrop-University Hospital.

July 30: Officer Sansone stopped a vehicle on Clinton Rd. and Meadow St. for a defective taillight. Upon an investigation, the driver, a male 27-year-old from West Hempstead, was arrested for aggravated unlicensed operation, second degree, for a prior DWI, aggravated unlicensed, third degree, for two active license suspensions and the defective taillight.

July 31: Officer Sommer stopped a vehicle on Clinton Rd. at St. James St. North for unsafe lane changing. Upon a license check, the operator, a male 31-year-old from Bay Shore, was arrested for two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation, second degree, for two prior DWI arrests, aggravated unlicensed, third degree, for an active license suspension, suspended vehicle registration, unsafe lane changing, uninspected vehicle and uninsured operation.
