Garden City Lawyer to Box for Charity
Terese Arenth discusses what it takes to step into the ring.

Garden City lawyer and fitness enthusiast Terese Arenth may be new to charity boxing. But when it comes to philanthropy or boxing for fitness, Arenth is no stranger. On Nov. 25, Arenth will combine the two – philanthropy and boxing – by stepping into the ring for the Long Island Fight for Charity at the Hilton Long Island in Melville.
The event benefits The Genesis School, Long Island Community Chest and National Foundation for Human Potential.
Boxing, Arenth says, is “great for cardio and toning, an amazing stress reliever, empowering and just plain fun.”
Patch caught up with Arenth, a partner at the law firm Moritt Hock & Hamroff, with an office in Garden City, to find out what it takes to fight for charity – a “win-win,” she says, noting that can “train like a real boxer while benefiting a great charitable cause.”

Patch: How fierce is training?
Terese Arenth: Training for the Fight for Charity has been pretty intense and will get even more fierce as fight night gets closer. I am training with the Fight for Charity's professional boxing trainers at least one-two times per week, in addition to my regular workouts with personal trainers and kickboxing at Tiger Schulmann's two-three times per week. I’m incorporating lots of cardio and strength training. Now that we are less than six months away from fight night, I will be increasing my time at the boxing gym. My goal is to learn the proper boxing techniques and form, while increasing my speed, accuracy and endurance. Oh yeah, and minimizing my chances of getting hurt in any way I can!

Patch: Is there a point where you'll know you're prepared?
TA: I sure hope so! When all is said and done, I’ll go into the fight confident that I have given it my all to adequately train and prepare for that moment in the ring.
Patch: What other kinds of volunteer work do you do?
TA: Over the years, I have worked with several great charitable organizations to help them raise funds, including chairing their fundraising events. My greatest passion has been volunteering my time to [Oyster Bay-based] Moms Who Kick, Inc., which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that was founded by my dear friend and Fight for Charity opponent, Joanne Hutchins. Moms Who Kick is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and to support women’s health. Their mission is to inspire, motivate and empower women to choose a healthy lifestyle.
Having personally experienced breast cancer and being a great believer in the importance of a healthy lifestyle for prevention and treatment, Moms Who Kick’s mission truly resonated with me and I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with this amazing group for several years. I currently sit on their Advisory Board and, as a promotional marketing attorney, I have volunteered my time to assist them over the past several years with their annual Model Moms calendar contest, which has been their primary fundraising vehicle. Having worked behind the scenes of the calendar contest for the past three years, I am proud to say that this year I will also be featured in the upcoming 2014 calendar as one of its models.
Patch: What's the best part about this experience?
TA: It is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience to benefit an amazing charitable cause while hopefully getting in the best shape of my life and having the opportunity to meet and work with the other business professionals that are volunteering their time to box and raise money for the Fight for Charity. We are forging great relationships working as a team to promote the event and raise funds for the charity, with the added bonus of having fun while we do it. It doesn’t get better than that!
