Garden City Police Arrest 3 Who Were Driving Stolen Car

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Aug. 30.

Aug. 24

  • A landscaping company was issued an appearance ticket for using gas powered leaf blowers.
  • Firefighters and police responded to a residence for a carbon monoxide alarm. Firefighters determined the cause to be a faulty battery.

  • An officer was traveling north on Cherry Valley Avenue when a southbound vehicle on the wrong side of the road almost struck his vehicle. The officer turned around, stopped the vehicle and arrested the 44-year-old female driver for DWI and driving on the wrong side of the road.
  • A landscaping company was issued a ticket for operating in the village without a permit.
  • A victim received a computer message that she had been hacked. The victim called the phone number displayed on her monitor and was advised that in order to fix the issue she had to transfer money from her bank account to another bank account. The victim attempted to complete the transaction however, the bank flagged the transaction as a scam.
  • A driver on Clinton Road was charged with fraudulent license plates.

Aug. 26

  • The identities of two people were reportedly used to open unauthorized bank accounts.
  • Unauthorized charges were made against a victim’s bank account.
  • A Garden City company reported they received multiple harassing and threatening phone calls.
  • A truck struck the Cherry Valley overpass. The driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
  • A landscaping company was issued an appearance ticket for using a gas leaf blower.
  • A driver on Stewart Avenue was charged with driving with a suspended license and not wearing a seatbelt.
  • Officers responded to Adelphi University for disorderly youths on bicycles acting in a disruptive manner and refusing orders to leave the campus. Upon investigation, three youths were located and cited for disorderly conduct and trespass. They were released to the parents.

  • Officers and parks personnel responded to Franklin Avenue for a large tree limb blocking traffic.
  • A person’s identity was reportedly used to open unauthorized credit card accounts.
  • A driver on Clinton Road was charged with unlicensed operation and excessive speed.

Aug. 28

  • Officers arrested a 24-year-old driver on 7th Street for DWI, turning unsafely and an open alcohol container in the vehicle.
  • Upon investigation of youths on bicycles disrupting traffic on 7th Street, officers cited two youths for disorderly and dangerous conduct. They were released to their parents.

Aug. 29

  • Officers arrested a 44-year-old driver on Stewart Avenue for DWI and excessive speed.
  • An officer, while on patrol on Franklin Avenue, was alerted by her police car's license plate reader of a stolen vehicle. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped off committing multiple traffic violations and struck two other vehicles a short distance away in Mineola. It then came to a stop. Three people got out of the stolen vehicle and fled the area on foot. Officers chased and apprehended all three. It was determined the subjects stole the vehicle in Southampton on Aug. 22. Officers also recovered several items reported stolen from vehicles in Suffolk County and Connecticut. The three male subjects, ages 19, 19 and 20, who all reside in Brooklyn, were charged with grand larceny of an auto and numerous charges of possession of stolen property. The 20 year-old was also charged with excessive speed, passing a red light and unlawful fleeing from a police officer. Two occupants of the vehicles struck by the stolen vehicle suffered minor injuries.
  • A victim’s identity was stolen and used to file for unauthorized unemployment benefits.
  • A company was issued an appearance ticket for soliciting door to door.

Aug. 30

  • A victim reported someone attempted to cash a duplicate forged check written out to him.
  • A victim’s identity was used to open a fraudulent bank account.
  • A vehicle on Old Country Road reportedly left the scene after crashing into and damaging another vehicle.
  • Firefighters and police responded to a medical office for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be a control panel issue.
