Latin Students Excel Again at Quiz Bowl

Competition was steep this year, with several teams finishing just one point behind the winners.

Garden City High School’s Latin students won several levels at the annual “Certamen” (Quiz Bowl), sponsored by the Suffolk Classical Society at SUNY Stony Brook this spring.

Many teams from both public and private schools (grades 7-12) across Long Island competed in question-and-answer sessions that tested vocabulary, grammar, mythology, English derivatives, history and culture.

All four levels (Latin I-Advanced IV) competed:

Advanced
: First Place Team (Summa cum Laude): Erica Giarraputo, Andrew Granville, Joseph Ienna and Emily Spain

Level Three: First Place Team (Summa cum Laude): Patrick Dolan, Daniella Ienna, Steven Menelly and Emily Mozder

Level One: Honorable Mention Team: Katelyn Focella, Olivia Giarraputo, Andrew McCann and Ryan Smith

“Competition was especially steep in the final round to determine the winners at each level,” teacher Linda Fabrizio said. “Coordinators of the event remarked that this year was especially close, with several teams finishing just one point behind the winners.”
