LI Native Gets Standing Ovation At Emmy's Acceptance Speech

UNIONDALE, NY — Long Island native Sheryl Lee Ralph wowed audiences with her acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards Monday night.
The Uniondale native won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Barbara Howard on the ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary. Ralph is the first Black woman to win in the category in decades. The show also won for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Ralph began her acceptance speech with a stirring rendition of Dianne Reeves’s "Endangered Species," which got a standing ovation from the audience.

"To anyone who has ever, ever had a dream and thought your dream wasn't, wouldn't, couldn't come true, I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like," Ralph said in her speech. "This is what striving looks like. And don't you ever, ever give up on you."
