Man Tried To Steal $600,000 From Garden City Business: Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Jan. 18.
Jan. 12
- Garden City detectives arrested a 28-year-old man for cashing multiple fraudulent checks totaling $593,000 against a Garden City company’s bank account. He was charged with two counts of grand larceny.
- A driver on 1st Street was charged with excessive speed, passing a red traffic light signal and improper license plates.
- Police and firefighters responded to a residence for a smoke condition and determined the cause to be a faulty burner.
- A driver on Cathedral Avenue was charged with unlicensed operation and altered license plates.
- A driver on Pine Street was charged with driving with a suspended license, improper plates, and unregistered vehicle.
- CVS reported two people entered the store and stole multiple packages of over-the-counter medications.
- Construction tools were reported stolen from the rear of a pick-up truck parked at Garden City Plaza.
- Upon investigation of a speeding e-bike on Clinton Road and Stewart Avenue, Officers arrested a 58-year-old man for driving with a revoked license (DWI related).

- Garden City detectives, Nassau County Police Department, Homeland Security and school officials conducted the RAVE Mobile App Emergency Notification testing system at various village schools. Additional testing was completed on Jan. 14.
- A driver on Meadow Street was charged with driving with a suspended license, passing a stop sign and operating a mobile device.
Jan. 14
- A Garden City business reported a fraudulent check for $14,500 was cashed against the company’s bank account.
- A truck struck the Cherry Valley overpass. The driver was charged with disobeying bridge clearance signs.
- Garden City officers assisted a Nassau County officer with the apprehension of a man on Old Country Road for possession of a stolen vehicle, driving with a suspended license and miscellaneous traffic infractions.
- A driver on Old Country Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and inadequate muffler.
- A driver on New Hyde Park Road was charged with driving with a suspended registration and improper plates.
- A driver on Meadow Street was charged with unlicensed operation and passing a stop sign.

- A man was seen on surveillance cameras checking car door handles in a Tremont Street driveway.
- Officers removed two large bags of debris that were blocking traffic on Stewart Avenue.
Jan. 16
- Officers responded to a Franklin Avenue bank for an alarm sounding and determined it was a fire alarm. Firefighters responded, entered the building and determined the alarm was activated by construction in a nearby business.
- Officers responded to a residence for a report of a suspicious noise and water leaking from the garage. Officers determined the cause was a broken water pipe and safeguarded the home by turning off the water main.
Jan. 17
- Officers responded to a traffic light malfunction on Cathedral Avenue.
- Police and firefighters responded to Hamilton Place for a report of natural gas leaking from a manhole cover. Upon confirmation of the leak, National Grid was notified.
Jan. 18
- As a result of strong winds, officers removed various items from the roadway at multiple locations on Stewart Avenue.
- A driver on New Hyde Park Road was cited for driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
- As a result of an auto accident in the vicinity of the Nassau Boulevard railroad station, officers safeguarded the train tracks until debris was removed from the area.
