Manganos Cannot Remain Free On Bail, Start Prison Next Month: Judge
A federal judge ruled that the couple couldn't stay free on bail while appealing their conviction, but pushed back their surrender date.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — A federal judge has denied a request from Edward and Linda Mangano to remain out on bail while they appeal their convictions, but has postponed their surrender date by another month.
Mangano, 60, was convicted in 2019 of a string of charges related to accepting bribes in his position as Nassau County executive. His wife Linda, 59, was found guilty about lying to the FBI about a no-show job she had. Mangano was sentenced to 12 years in prison, and Linda received a sentence of 15 months.
The Manganos were both supposed to begin their sentences on July 27. Edward Mangano's sentence was pushed back to that date from July 13 after he filed a motion asking that he and his wife remain free on bail while appealing their conviction.

Judge Joan Azarack denied their appeal today, but pushed back the start of their sentence to Aug. 27. "The Court has determined that Defendants are not entitled to bail pending appeal because they have not raised substantial questions that are likely to result in reversal or an order for a new trial on all of their convictions," Azarack wrote in her opinion.
She granted an extension of their sentence start to give them time to file appeals.

As part of the bribery scheme, Mangano pressured the Town of Oyster Bay into backing $20 million in loans for restaurateur Harendra Singh, who was bribing the Manganos. Last week, Mangano was ordered to pay more than $10 million in restitution.
Linda Mangano was paid $450,000 for a no-show job by Singh over the years her husband was in office as Nassau County Executive.
