Uniondale Social Studies Educators Attend Acclaimed Conferences

Uniondale Presents Tools to Support Student Opportunities and Success

UNIONDALE, NEW YORK—Uniondale School District educators recently attended the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) network meeting and the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Conference. Uniondale School District Director of Social Studies David Hollander, Uniondale High School social studies teacher Sanjay Singh and Lawrence Road Middle School social studies teacher Claudine DeRouen presented and explored resources, strategies and programs that enhance student learning.

“At the TPS network meeting, we collaborated with educators, historians and professors from across the country, as well as with national organizations, such as Gilder Lehrman, the Digital Inquiry Group, New Visions and historical societies,” said Mr. Hollander. “These conversations helped deepen our shared commitment to building historical thinking through primary sources. We learned about resources and programs that we can utilize while enjoying a shared sense of purpose for the work we do.”

The Uniondale team presented during a poster session, highlighting two of the District’s developing learning arcs. Many educators stopped to speak with the Uniondale team, taking printed copies of the presentation and requesting additional information on the learning arcs.

“It was energizing to see such genuine interest in the work created by Uniondale teachers,” said Mr. Hollander.

Following the TPS network meeting, Mr. Hollander, Mr. Singh and Mrs. DeRouen attended the NCSS Conference. They attended productive sessions and heard from impactful speakers, including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and the House of Representatives minority leader, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries. They also explored the exhibit hall, connecting with organizations and engaging with free, high-quality resources and strategies for classroom use.
