Free Skin Cancer Screenings In Glen Cove: Oct. 15
Free skin cancer screenings will be offered in Glen Cove on Friday, Oct. 15. Appointments are required.
GLEN COVE, NY — Free skin cancer screenings will be available to the Glen Cove community on Friday.
Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D-Glen Cove) is partnering with Long Island-based dermatologist Dr. Eve Lupenko to bring these screenings to the Glen Cove Ferry Terminal, located at 73 Garvies Point Rd. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"Skin examinations should be part of everyone's annual health care routine," DeRiggi-Whitton said. "Regardless of your age, gender, or background, skin cancer is a real concern, and everyone should take advantage of this opportunity."
Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in the United States, with roughly 9,500 people being diagnosed with the disease every day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association. A vast majority of those cases end up being nonmelanoma skin cancer. And the most common types of nonmelanoma skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Skin cancers are often caused by exposure to the sun, which is why dermatologists always recommend wearing sunscreen. They also advise people to stay away from tanning beds and sunlamps, since these artificial light sources emit harmful UV rays.
