Glen Cove After 3 Gears Up for Spring Project

The Glen Cove After 3 program is entering its second cycle, opening students to science topics they will research, conduct experiments on and create projects for the Spring showcase.

This cycle's topics are the animal kingdom, plant life and insects, force and motion, matter and energy, rock formations, the human body and health, and weather and space.

The program's first cycle was titled "New York: Past and Present." It was showcased Feb. 8 in the city's elementary school gymnasiums, where students displayed their projects.

Those included displays of Ellis Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, New York Native American dolls and dream catchers, and a slide show on beaches and other attractions claimed by Glen Cove, Long Island and New York City that fifth-graders from Connolly Elementary School put together.

Third-graders performed the skills they learned in the Martial Arts class at Landing Elementary School, under the tutelage of Chris Tierney of Wilson's Martial Arts.

To learn about joining the Glen Cove After 3 program, call the program office at 516-277-1303. There is currently a waiting list, but the best way to secure a future spot is by submitting an application, according to the Glen Cove Youth Bureau.
