GLEN COVE, NY — Glen Cove Hospital has earned accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery.

The accreditation was issued by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), a nonprofit patient safety organization based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Medical professionals, hospitals, and freestanding outpatient facilities seeking recognition must first undergo extensive self-assessments, site inspections, and evaluations.

"The Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery means that Glen Cove Hospital has met nationally recognized standards and reflects our commitment to providing the highest quality of care to patients," said Dr. Michael Grieco, program director of the Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery.

A hernia occurs when an organ — typically the stomach or intestines — squeezes past an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. Roughly one million hernia repairs are performed annually in the United States, according to medical professionals, and can affect men, women, and children. These repairs are also one of the most common operations performed at Glen Cove Hospital, according to a press release.

Hernias are typically treated through open surgery, laparoscopic surgery (under general anesthesia), and small incision surgery (under local anesthesia). Some procedures may require overnight hospitalization.

"An untreated hernia can cause pain and may lead to other health problems," Grieco said. "Surgery is considered the only way to permanently fix a hernia."

According to Grieco, Glen Cove Hospital earned accreditation in part due to its highly trained and experienced surgeons and its historically low complication and infection rates for operations.

"This prestigious accreditation signals that Glen Cove hernia surgery program is among the best in the nation and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible for its patients," said Kerri Anne Scanlon, the hospital's executive director. "The hospital continually strives to provide state-of-the-art advanced technologies and patient-focused care to meet the needs of the community."

Glen Cove Hospital is a 247-bed medical facility that's part of the Northwell Health system. It's located at 101 St. Andrews Lane.
