Glen Cove Hospital Opens New 'Cutting-Edge' $11M Neurological Center

The "spa-like" unit will treat brain injury, Parkinson's disease and stroke with virtual reality, gaming, dance and other therapies.

GLEN COVE, NY — Glen Cove Hospital opened a $11 million rehabilitation unit for neurological conditions like brain injury, Parkinson's disease and stroke.

The unit is 15,500 square feet, with 28 beds, 12 of them dedicated for Parkinson's patients.

The rehab center will employ cutting-edge methods like creative arts, dance therapy, virtual reality and gaming therapy.

“The new state-of-the-art physical medicine rehabilitation unit was designed to provide a holistic therapeutic environment sensitive to the needs of patients with neurological deficits,” Kerri Anne Scanlon, RN, executive director at Glen Cove Hospital. said.

Scanlon said the rehab has a "spa-like atmosphere that features soothing paint colors, accent tiles, artworks and lighting to create calming environments for patients with diverse neurological needs."

There is a simulated apartment for patients to practice daily activities before going home. A virtual reality system helps patients practice physical and cognitive skills.

The center will also have a Parkinson's-specific program headed by Dr. Lyubov Rubin, with a range of therapies to help patients regain function.
