An estimated 30 percent of hospitalized people are living with diabetes, Northwell Health officials said.

GLEN COVE, NY — Glen Cove Hospital has received a national recognition from the American Diabetes Association and The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit health care watchdog.
The first-of-its-kind designation program evaluates hospitals based on their care for patients with diabetes during admission, stay and discharge. The hospital is just one of 17 in the country honored with the designation of "Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes," Northwell Health officials announced.
“Receiving the prestigious designations from both the Leapfrog Group and the American Diabetes Association is a testament to Glen Cove Hospital's unwavering commitment to providing exceptional quality care, especially in our approach to managing diabetes,” said Bradley Sherman, MD, medical director at the hospital. “We are proud to stand as a beacon of excellence in diabetes care, ensuring each patient receives the utmost attention and support on their journey to better health.”

An estimated 30 percent of hospitalized people are living with diabetes. Recognized hospitals provide safe, high-quality care for them, by implementing blood glucose (blood sugar) testing and hypoglycemia protocols, specialized preparation for inpatient surgery, meals and insulin regimen planning, and robust discharge planning for high-risk patients with diabetes.
“As a diabetes specialist, I know firsthand the challenges and complexities of managing this complex condition,” said Barbara Keber, MD, chairperson, medical board of family medicine at the hospital. “This recognition reinforces our dedication to providing patients with the most effective treatments, education, and support to manage their diabetes and live healthier lives.”

For its annual rating, the Leapfrog Group uses an academic grading scale with five letter grades to score nearly 3,000 hospitals nationwide on more than 30 measures of patient safety. Leapfrog says its hospital rating system is the only one in the country focusing solely on a hospital’s ability to protect patients from preventable errors.
