Glen Cove Mayor’s Snapper Derby Set For August

Kids ages 6 to 16 are invited to join the fishing event.

Kids are invited to compete in the upcoming annual Glen Cove Mayor’s Snapper Derby on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Those who want to join in on the fishing fun must bring their own rod to the event, which is held at the Pryibil Beach Fishing Pier.

“This is one of my favorite city events,” Mayor Reggie Spinello said in a press release. “There is nothing better than seeing a youngster bait their first hook or get the best catch of the day.”

Trophies for first, second and third place will be awarded to the top catches of the day in each division as well as to the Best Angler of the day.

The Snapper Derby, which is hosted by the Glen Cove Anglers Club, will offer a junior division for kids ages 6 to 10 and a senior division for kids 11 to 16.

All participants will receive a Glen Cove Mayor’s Snapper Derby T-shirt, a hot dog, a soda and a raffle ticket for prizes (while supplies last).

Registration will be held on the day of from 8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Kids are required to bring their own rod.

All prizes will be awarded at the end of the day and winners must be present to accept their prize.

The event will be held rain or shine.

The Glen Cove Mayor’s Snapper Derby is held in cooperation with the Glen Cove Department of Parks & Recreation with support from the Glen Cove Anglers Club and the Matinecock Rod & Gun Club.
