Formula E Qualcomm New York City ePrix Race In Red Hook, Brooklyn: What You Need To Know

Trying to go to the race? Want to know more about it? Or just want to avoid the traffic? Here's what you need to know.

RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — Formula E racing is coming to Brooklyn this weekend at the New York City ePrix Race at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook.

The races have drawn a lot of publicity to the oft-neglected plot of land on the Buttermilk Channel. The actual races take place on July 15 and 16.

Here's what you need to know about the weekend, whether you want to go, just want to learn more or are trying to avoid the traffic and madness all together.

Formula E

Formula E is the first racing series to use single-seat electric cars that produce zero emissions. The cars, though, don't lack for power. They can reach 140 miles per hour in under three seconds, according to the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

The track

The race course is 1.21 miles long and features 10 hairpin turns, all set against the backdrop of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan.

Race schedule

Races take place Saturday and Sunday, with practices beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. on Sunday. The actual races are at 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. See a full schedule here (or in the race map above).

Tickets

Single-race tickets are $85 for adults or $150 for a weekend pass, with discounts for students and children. You can purchase them here.

Traffic and parking

There is no parking on-site, and race organizers say they encourage everyone to leave their car at home. The course is entirely off the street, so roads won't be affected. However, the race will shut down a portion of the Brooklyn Greenway bike path.
