Red Hook Will Get A Small, Storm-Protecting Wall

The wall will protect against a "10-year storm" but not a 100-year one, DNAinfo reports.

RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — Red Hook will be getting a small, waterfront wall that will protect it from storm surges but not another major hurricane like Sandy, DNAinfo reports.

City officials gave a presentation about the new wall on Saturday morning at the Red Hook Public Library. The wall can be up and running by August along Beard Street.

It would protect against a so-called "10-year storm" — one that is likely to occur about one every 10 years — but not one that happens every 100 years, as Sandy was.

Here's more from DNAinfo:

The short-term plan calls for the installation of Hesco barriers, a 4-foot high wall filled with dirt, on the sidewalk along Beard Street from Van Brunt Street to a point just up to the IKEA property line, Colon said. The barrier will abut the building at the corner of Van Brunt Street and abut the construction fence for the future "Red Hoek Point," a Norm Foster-designed office complex on the site of the former Revere Sugar factory, she said.
