Cars Have Killed 11 Cyclists In NYC So Far This Year

Take a look at the data on cyclist fatalities in NYC.

GRAMERCY, NY — The number of cyclists killed in car collisions has remained flat this year, compared to the same time period last year, according to city data.

In the first seven months of both years, 11 cyclists throughout the city have been killed motor vehicle collisions. In total, 2016 saw 18 cyclist fatalities. A number of high-profile deaths have moved the cycling community to demand greater safety measures from the city.

In May, a 74-year-old cyclist was killed in Gramercy when a passenger in a cab opened his door into the bike lane and the cyclist was struck. The woman, Xin Kang Wang, died from her injuries about 10 days after the collision.

On Tuesday, activists with Transportation Alternatives former a human barrier next to the bike lane on Second Avenue in Midtown East, in an effort to draw attentino to their plea for more protected bike lanes throughout the city.
