Danny Meyer, founder of Shake Shack and Union Square Hospitality Group, not only spearheaded the $11 million transformation of the then-decrepit Madison Square Park in the late 1990s, he also helped create the Conservancy in 2003 to ensure that the park would be one of the best in the city. He tapped fellow honoree Lynden B. Miller, author and renowned public garden designer, to design and restore Madison Square Park's gardens and landscape.
“Without the contributions of Danny and Lynden, the Madison Square Park we know and love today — with its lush lawns, nationally recognized plant collections, and the OG Shake Shack — simply would not exist,” said Holly Leicht, Executive Director of the Conservancy. “And while we are honoring them for their part in shaping the history of Madison Square Park, they are equally deserving for the mark they’ve made on New York City as a whole. They are both icons in the pantheon of distinguished New Yorkers who have made this city a better place.”
