Man Falls To Death Passing Between Subway Cars Near Union Square
Subway riders bunched newspapers and cloth under the man's head to try and stop the bleeding, a witness said.

GRAMERCY, NY — A man crossing between subway cars on a Union Square-bound 4 train slipped and cracked his head open Sunday night — dying minutes later, police said.
The 33-year-old man was surfing between train cars when he slipped and struck his head at about 10:15 p.m., authorities said.
Straphangers who witnessed the scene unfold dragged the man into the last car of the train and tried to stop the flood of blood pouring from the back of his head with newspapers and cloth, but the man couldn't be saved and was pronounced dead at Beth Israel Medical Center, according to police and a witness.

“He was crossing from carriage to carriage from the front of the train and next thing I think he stumbled and hit his head,” Alexander Daniyan, a 41-year-old wealth manager who was heading from his office in Harlem home to Bushwick, told Patch.
“People saw that he was bleeding and dragged him into the next carriage, but he basically bled out on the ground. They couldn’t stop the bleeding.”

Daniyan called 911 once the train pulled into the Union Square station, but the man appeared too far gone. (Warning: Graphic image)
"I saw him take a few gasps, but when the police came they pronounced him dead," said Daniyan. "It was completely avoidable — that’s the saddest thing about the whole thing."
Police are investigating the incident.
