Garodnick, who represents part of Murray Hill, proposed the bill in New York City Council on Wednesday with council member Vanessa Gibson. The bill, which in its short life has faced staunch opposition from police leaders, would require the department to report more data on the various surveillance tools it uses.

Garodnick hosted a Facebook Live conversation on the bill Thursday at 1:30 p.m. with Rashida Richardson, legislative counsel with the New York Civil Liberties Union.

The act, named the POST Act, or Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology, would mandate that the department put out a "draft surveillance impact and use policy" for each surveillance tool it uses.
