Muslim Teen: I Was Attacked on NYC Subway by White Guys Shouting 'Donald Trump'

Three men in their 20s tried to rip off the teen's hijab, police say, after calling her a "terrorist" and saying, "Go back to your country."

UPDATE, Dec. 14: Yasmin Seweid, the teen who said she was attacked, has been arrested by the NYPD for allegedly making up the entire story.

GRAMERCY, NY — In one of the most disgusting hate crimes reported in the New York City metro area since Donald Trump was elected president, an 18-year-old Muslim woman was attacked Wednesday night in the 23rd Street subway station by a trio of white, male 20-somethings who shouted "Donald Trump!" and tried to remove her hijab, or headscarf, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

The young woman was standing on the station's northbound 6 train platform around 10 p.m., police said, when she was approached by the three men.

"They ripped her purse off her shoulder, and they were shouting, 'Go back to your country' and 'You don't belong here,'" an NYPD spokesman said.

Her attackers repeatedly yelled Donald Trump's name and called her a terrorist, police said — "then tried to rip off the head wrap she had on her head."

After they had gotten their fill of assaulting and taunting the young woman, her attackers fled the station, police said. The suspects still hadn't been tracked down by Friday afternoon.

The NYPD is investigating the attack as a hate crime.

UPDATE: The Council on American-Islamic Relations released the following statement Friday evening, in reaction to the 6 train attack:

"American Muslims, and particularly men and women who wear religious attire, are being increasingly targeted by hate nationwide in the wake of the November 8 election. Our elected leaders and local law enforcement authorities must continue to take strong action to protect Muslims and other minority groups in a period of growing Islamophobia and political division."
