Rally in Memory of Michael Brown to Be Held in Union Square Saturday

The rally will mark the two-year anniversary of Brown's death.

More than 100 people are slated to attend a rally in Union Square to mark the two-year anniversary of the shooting death of Michael Brown by a police officer near St. Louis — and to call for change to the country's justice system.

The event on Aug. 13 is hosted by Black Matters, a community which shares news pertinent to race issues.

"Two years have passed since the shooting of Michael Brown," the Facebook event says. "Nothing has changed."

Rev. Cruz (Trinity Lutheran Church in Sunset Park)

Kenneth Shelton Jr. (Campaign to Shut Down Rikers, Black Lives Matter: NYC)

John J. Joyner Jr. (Black Action United Global Organization)

"We don't see a law enforcement reform," the event description says. "We don't see an increase of transparency. All we see is growing numbers of innocent black people murdered by police."

Last week, a group of activists under the name Millions March NYC camped out in City Hall Park starting Aug. 1 to demand the resignation of NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, the defunding of the NYPD and reparations for all victims and families of police brutality. Bratton resigned on Aug. 2, a development that Millions March NYC touted as their own.
