Thief Steals $2K After Asking 93-Year-Old Woman For Bail Money, Police Say

Police say the thief told a Gramercy woman that her friend needed cash to post bail.

GRAMERCY, NY — A man scammed a 93-year-old woman out of $2,000 by claiming her friend needed bail money, according to police.

Authorities say that an unidentified man stole money from a Gramercy woman last month, and are seeking the public's help identifying him. On May 26, the man called the woman at her Grammercy home and told her that one of her friends had been arrested and was behind bars on Rikers Island, police said. The man asked her for $6,500 in cash to post the friend's bail, but the woman said she could only give him $2,000, according to the NYPD. The man later retrieved the cash from the woman's home, authorities said.

Later, police said the woman became suspicious and called her friend, who told her that he had not been arrested and did not need cash for bail. No arrests have been made and police are still searching for the man.
