Carbon Monoxide Levels at LI Bagel Shop Could Have Been Fatal
A police officer's carbon monoxide detector went off at the bagel shop, potentially saving lives Wednesday morning.

GREAT NECK PLAZA, NY –Carbon monoxide levels at a Long Island bagel shop were high enough to kill Wednesday morning, but thankfully two Nassau Police officers happened to be inside the shop at the time.
According to police, two Nassau POP officers were visiting the Best Bagel shop located at 40 Middle Neck Road in Great Neck Plaza when one of the officers’ carbon monoxide detectors began to detect a reading at 11:51 a.m.
The officers evacuated the store, which had about five patrons and five employees inside. The Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company was called and responded to assist in the detection and location of the source of the odorless, deadly gas.

The fire department discovered an excessively high reading of 600ppm (parts per million) from within the shop. At sustained CO concentrations above 150 to 200 ppm, disorientation, unconsciousness and death are possible.
The source of the carbon monoxide was determined to be a faulty boiler.

There were no injuries reported. Best Bagel will remain closed until further notice while the boiler is repaired.
