Flash Flood Emergency Issued For Northern Nassau

BREAKING: Historic flooding is unfolding across the region tonight. Move to higher ground immediately if you live in the red area.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — A flash flood emergency was issued for northern Nassau County Wednesday night.

"This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW!" the National Weather Service says.

The flash flood emergency is in effect until 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

At 10:08 p.m., doppler radar indicated heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2 and 3.5 inches of rain has already fallen and an additional 2-5 inches per hour is possible. Flash flooding is already occurring.

"Flash flood emergencies are a rare alert issued by the National Weather Service that should not only grab your attention, but also serve as a signal that you're likely in imminent danger," weather.com says.

More than 2,700 PSEG Long Island customers were without power as of 10:20 p.m., according to the PSEG outage map.

A tornado watch is in effect for the entire island until 1 a.m. Thursday.

The remnants of Hurricane Ida spawned tornadoes in several states and caused historic flooding in many areas Wednesday.
