Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued For Long Island

Both the morning and evening commutes Friday could be impacted by the nasty winter weather.

LONG ISLAND, NY — The National Weather Service has issued the following hazardous weather outlook for Long Island:

A cold front will move through late Thursday night into Friday with quickly falling temperatures behind its passage. As a result, rain Thursday night will change to a wintry mix from northwest to southeast, with several hours of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. This will lead to ice accretion on any untreated surfaces, making travel hazardous potentially for both the morning and evening commutes on Friday. Additionally, any standing water from rainfall and melting snow will freeze, exacerbating these conditions.

Just a trace of snow accumulation, if any, is expected, but even small amounts of freezing rain can cover the pavement and especially bridges with a solid glaze of ice making driving extremely dangerous and nearly impossible, the NWS says.

The best chance for sleet and freezing rain will come late Friday afternoon into the early evening, according to the hour-by-hour forecast.
