2 Hurt In Long Island Expressway Crash
One person was airlifted following the Thursday evening crash, fire officials say.
Two people were hospitalized, including one who was airlifted, following a crash on Thursday afternoon on the Long Island Expressway, according to fire officials.
The crash, which left one person trapped, occurred on the eastbound lanes, between Exits 48 and 49, at 3:37 p.m. The Melville Fire Department responded to the scene and used heavy rescue spreaders, cutters and ram tools to rescue one of the drivers.
One person was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by Suffolk Police helicopter. Another person was taken to Plainview Hospital by Melville Rescue Squad ambulance.

About 25 Melville firefighters responded to the scene with three ambulances, heavy rescue truck, two engines, paramedic unit and fire police. Units were under the direction of First Assistant Chief David Kaplan, according to PIO Steve Silverman.
