Burglar Steals Car, Gets Arrested For DWI In Melville: Police

The man was arrested on Wednesday night.

A man entered an occupied Melville home, drove off in the homeowner's car and was arrested for DWI after he was found down the street a short time later on Wednesday night, police say.

According to authorities, 32-year-old Deer Park resident Jemel Edwards unlawfully entered a Jacobs Path home at 9:55 p.m. He was confronted by the homeowner and fled through the front door with keys he stole from the house, police say. He drove off in the homeowner's 2014 Toyota Camry and was found by a patrol officer stopped at the corner of Jacobs Path and Waterford Drive at 10:05 p.m.

Edwards was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree grand larceny and DWI (felony second offense).

He is being held overnight at the Second Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday morning.
