MELVILLE, NY — A Melville family's dog was saved after he fell into a cesspool on Wednesday night.

Duke, a black Labrador mix, fell 12 feet down into an open cesspool that was being serviced at a home on Eastfield Lane around 10 p.m., said public information officer Steve Silverman. Melville and Huntington Manor firefighters teamed up with Suffolk police to rescue Duke.

Melville firefighters arrived and found Duke desperately trying to stay afloat in the water at the bottom of the cesspool.

The Huntington Manor Fire Department Technical Rescue Team and Suffolk Police Emergency Services were called to help. Rescuers used confined space and technical rescue training and equipment to successfully remove Duke from the cesspool within 30 minutes. Duke appeared to be in good condition and was taken to a nearby emergency veterinary center to be evaluated, Silverman said.

Suffolk County Fire-Rescue Coordinators also provided help. The incident was under the direction of Melville FD Assistant Chiefs Jason Bernfeld and Don Barclay.
