Winter Storm Watch Issued For Long Island

A second, larger round of snow is on its way.

Tuesday’s minor snowfall will give way to rain overnight before a more significant round of snow moves into the region Wednesday night.

A winter weather advisory expires at midnight Wednesday after Long Island got hit with a couple inches of snow Tuesday evening. Rain is in the forecast throughout the day Wednesday before it mixes with or changes to snow and sleet Wednesday evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the region from 7 p.m. Wednesday until 7 p.m. Thursday. The wintry mix will change to all snow around or shortly after midnight on Thursday. The NWS is predicting 6-8 inches of snow for Long Island before the storm moves on Thursday afternoon.

“Snow covered surfaces coated with ice will make traveling difficult at times,” the NWS said.

The full forecast:

  • Tonight- Rain and sleet, becoming all rain after 10pm. Temperature rising to around 37 by 1am. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. South wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible.
  • Wednesday- Light rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 39. Wind chill values between 30 and 35. West wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
  • Wednesday Night- Rain, snow, and sleet before 2am, then snow and sleet between 2am and 4am, then snow after 4am. Low around 24. Light and variable wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
  • Thursday- Snow, mainly before 4pm. Temperature falling to around 23 by 10am. Wind chill values between 10 and 20. Northwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
  • Thursday Night- A chance of snow, mainly before 7pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 7. Northwest wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Friday- Sunny, with a high near 26.
