Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Of LI To Kick Off In Melville

The walk is scheduled for October, but a kickoff celebration featuring speakers is slated for early August.

MELVILLE, NY — The American Cancer Society is set to kick off the season for its 31st annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Long Island with a celebration on Aug. 8 in Melville, the charity announced.

The walk is held each October and provides a supportive community for courageous breast cancer survivors and metastatic breast cancer thrivers, caregivers and families alike. This year’s walk is scheduled for Oct. 20 at Jones Beach.

The kickoff is scheduled for 8 a.m. Aug. 8 at the Marriott Melville Long Island, at 1350 Walt Whitman Road, Melville. Three speeches are scheduled.

Dr. Christina Annunziata, senior vice president of extramural discovery science at the American Cancer Society, is set to serve as keynote speaker.

Joe Rock, host of afternoon drive on WBAB 102.3 FM; and Stacey Sager, a WABC-TV reporter and breast cancer survivor, are also set to speak.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, except for skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. More than 313,510 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2024, the society stated. Since 1993, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign has united communities, companies, and people with a collective goal to end breast cancer for everyone.
