Lottery Opens For 5 Discounted Harlem Apartments

Rents start at $1,850 for a studio apartment and increase to $2,150 for a one-bedroom and $2,695 for a two-bedroom.

HARLEM, NY — A lottery for 5 below-market apartments in a new Harlem building is accepting applications. The new development, located on West 137th Street between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and Edgecomb Avenue, is renting studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments at rates higher than the area median income.

While the units are being billed as "affordable" the rents aren't be considered a bargain by neighborhood standards. Rents start at $1,850 for a studio apartment and increase to $2,150 for a one-bedroom apartment and $2,695 for a two-bedroom apartment.

Individuals applying for the apartments must earn at least $63,429 per year to qualify for a studio and $73,715 to qualify for a one-bedroom. Families of up to five people seeking the two-bedroom units must earn a combined income of at least $90,858 or $92,400, according to the city's Housing Connect website.

Applications must be submitted online by using the city's Housing Connect website or through the mail by Sept. 21 and there will be no fee to apply. There is no fee to apply and applicants selected for the units will not have to pay a broker's fee. Each unit features a balcony and an in-unit washer and dryer, according to the housing connect website.
