Man Hit, Killed By Driver Near Marcus Garvey Park In Harlem

A 61-year-old man died after being hit by a Jeep as he crossed Fifth Avenue toward Marcus Garvey Park, police said.

HARLEM, NY — A 61-year-old man died after being hit by a car while crossing a street near Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, police said.

The crash happened around 9:15 a.m. on Aug. 27, when the victim and a 44-year-old man were crossing Fifth Avenue at West 124th Street, walking toward the park within the intersection.

As they crossed the street, the driver of a Jeep Liberty heading south along Fifth Avenue tried to turn right onto West 124th Street and struck both men in the intersection.

Both men suffered back injuries but were still conscious when responders arrived. The 44-year-old was brought to Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospital, while the 61-year-old was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he died from his injuries the next day, police said.

The Jeep driver, a 67-year-old man, stayed at the scene and has not been charged with a crime, police said.

The victim's name is being withheld pending family notification. The NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating the crash.

Since 2011, 10 people have been injured in crashes at the same intersection, according to the city's Vision Zero data. The victims — which do not include the latest crash — included three cyclists, three pedestrians and four drivers.
