Man, 72, Killed In Harlem Knife Attack On New Year's Day: NYPD

The victim was slashed in the neck.

HARLEM, NY — A 72-year-old man was slashed to death in Harlem outside of a bodega on New Year's, New York City Police Department officials said.

According to the NYPD, on Wednesday at 4 p.m., a perpetrator approached the victim, Alfredo Cortes, at West 137th Street and Lenox Avenue and slashed him in the neck.

Emergency responders rushed the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, where he was pronounced dead.

One suspect, Darnell Jackson, 39, was arrested and charged with one count of murder in the first degree, police said. The incident took place near where Jackson lives, police said.

The NYPD is still identifying the victim, officials said. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
