New Chipotle Opening On 116th Street In East Harlem, Plans Show

The burrito chain has no locations anywhere in East Harlem — but it has plans to change that with a new restaurant on East 116th Street.

HARLEM, NY — Smells of simmering carnitas and sizzling onions will soon fill the air on East 116th Street, where Chipotle Mexican Grill is planning to open a new burrito spot in the coming months, according to plans filed with the city.

The nationwide fast-casual chain plans to open up its latest outpost at 165-167 East 116th St., between Third and Lexington avenues. The storefronts were previously home to GameStop and an AT&T store.

Chipotle representatives were set to present their plans to East Harlem's Community Board 11 on Tuesday evening, as they seek approval for a wine, beer and cider license.

Meanwhile, records from the Department of Buildings show that the company has been filing plans since January for alterations to the storefront and facade — including an April 27 filing for electrical work to hang an illuminated sign reading, "Chipotle Mexican Grill."

A Chipotle spokesperson told Patch that the restaurant will open "at some point this summer."

"In addition to a dining room and front line, this location will feature a walk up window for guests to pick up digital orders without having to enter the restaurant," spokesperson Sally Evans said.

As it stands, the company's nearest location is on West 125th Street just east of Malcolm X Boulevard, with no restaurants whatsoever in East Harlem.
