NYC Hospital System's First Baby Of 2019 Was Born In Harlem

The baby girl was born around 12:56 a.m. at Harlem Hospital.

HARLEM, NY — The first baby born this year in New York City's public health system is a Harlemite, according to city health officials.

Génesis Elisa Noriega was born around 12:56 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Harlem Hospital, according to an NYC Health + Hospitals press release. Noriega weighed in at seven-pounds and eight-ounces, measuring 50 inches at her birth, hospital officials said.

The baby girl is the third child of parents Maria Contreras and Gabino Noriega, hospital officials said. Noriega beat Bronx-born Kyrie Clarke by seven minutes to be the city hospital system's first baby of 2019, officials said.

More than 300 New York City babies were likely born on New Year's Day, according to a UNICEF report. About 11,283 babies were predicted to be born in the United States and 395,072 babies were predicted to be born across the globe on New Year's Day, UNICEF reported.
